“Everyone enjoys being acknowledged and appreciated. Sometimes even the simplest act of gratitude can change someone’s entire life.”
Roy T. Bennet
Appreciation is a powerful tool that can positively impact both the giver and the receiver. When we show appreciation, we acknowledge and value the efforts and contributions of others.
It feels good to take time to appreciate someone’s efforts, even something simple that might not be noticed otherwise. This can boost morale and motivation.
In addition, expressing gratitude can also benefit you, the person giving the appreciation. I find joy in appreciating others. It’s been said appreciation is our greatest emotional need.
Yet, when I look in the mirror and try to appreciate myself, it’s a little more challenging. Perfectionism, judgment, and inner criticism can drown out any bit of acknowledgment or appreciation that I might have for myself. It feels selfish and uncomfortable.
But is there a gift in being able to recognize the impact of what we do? Even if it is just acknowledging an action that you took that was hard or challenging. What would it feel like to appreciate ourselves a tiny bit more? To give yourself gratitude for the way you show up in the world?
In the words of Roy T. Bennet, “ Everyone enjoys being acknowledged”
So let’s make it a habit to express our gratitude and appreciation.
